Prepare for the unknown

There are some steps to take for organisations to prepare for future crises:

  1. Ensure awareness at the highest levels - top management must be fully aware of potential crises and how to plan and prepare for them
  2. Develop appropriate operational capabilities - monitoring capability to detect abnormal signals, emergency information systems, mobilisation of crisis units, capabilities to handle emergencies with incomplete information and in a decentralised manner
  3. Engage in continuing preparation efforts - training, continuous feedback, tests and simulation exercises, inter-actor learning, personal involvement of elites, a general scheduling of the intervention (gradually introduce tests, involving increasing numbers of actors) and mastery of core processes (this will highlight the firm's weaknesses as well)
